Just compile the RPG400 program with *VARCHAR specified as a parameter to CVTOPT on the compile commend. It will bring the field into the program. Check the manual - page 247 in my copy.

P.S. Convert the damned program - if the programmer can't understand basic RPG IV then he sure as hell can't understand RPG400! RPG IV in its base form is a superset of RPG400 - there's nothing to learn. To refuse to learns just pathetic.
