You should always be suspicious of text in any word processing
program. Hyphens and quotes are very prone to being "helpfully"
converted to fancier forms (proper dashes, curved quotes), which are
outside the safe ASCII range.

Why is that stuff in a Word document in the first place?

As a workaround, you can try pasting to Notepad first, then recopying
from Notepad.
