It's not the hardware. Like Jim said it's the object oriented nature, better security, etc.
Many moons ago we had a share with intensive I/O being hammered on by PC's. The performance was bad. We put an IPCS card in that same box and directed the users to that. Using the same disk drives, etc the performance was much better.

If it's not a problem for your workload that's great. And I'm not saying to avoid it at all costs.
