Not sure exactly when "blocked inserts" became available, but I recall it
being a big deal on old machines.

From MySQL I know that mysqldump (for exporting tables to SQL text files) embeds a temporary disable and re-enable of index maintenance around the actual insert statements. I didn't find something similar for DB2/UDB, though.
