I don't often chime in on this list, but having recently made a
significant change in our backup strategy, I figure I have some
experience.
We are located along the South Carolina coastline, otherwise know as
"hurricane alley".
We were using BRMS along with a tape library and moving tapes offsite
daily, which take time, money and resources.
Last year we purchased a VTL that behaves exactly like our IBM tape
library. BRMS doesn't know it's not an IBM tape library.
We replicate the daily save to another VTL in the cloud. This replication
is completed within one hour after the back to on-site VTL is complete.
As a side note we do a BRMS full system save once a week and this back up
is replicated to the VTL in the cloud within one hour after completion.
Here's the real magic. We have a partition in this same cloud and during
our test this past year, we were able to restore our partition from the
VTL to bare metal in four hours, start to finish.
We highly recommend iInTheCloud for hosting the VTL and DR partition.
This stuff really works!

Backup must always be looked at as insurance is.
You CAN own a home without purchasing insurance against theft, or fire,
or weather. But do you?
If your home burns or is flattened by a tornado or hurricane ore
*reallybigtree how can you afford to rebuild your home. NOW I don't kow
you so perhaps it's possibly that you are wealthy and can rebuilt with
money from your bank account or from selling another asset. But most
people cannot so they pay insurance because the risk is too high.
So it is with backup. You can say OK I will risk the fact that I do not
have off-site backups. Hopefully it will never happen that will need it
and if I do need it because my building burned down I will simply close
my business. Or I can stand the time it takes to rebuild my computer
from various pieces.
But most companies cannot afford to lose their computer system. And if
you cannot then you must, for the continuance of the business, have a
set of data off-site, readily accessible, to recover the computer and
thus continue the business.
So the decision to spend the money is exactly the decision to purchase
insurance.
