I think Jim may be looking at the wrong thing when thinking about the OP (James) but then again, it has me thinking what James is trying to do.

Is his periodic job scheduler doing something like Jim just replied? Looking for hung jobs, etc? If so, then we shouldn't be talking about job schedulers but instead we should be talking about a whole different set of tools, like Halcyon's MessengerPlus which will send alerts based on a wide variety of criteria. And the alerts can be customized for different people at different times of the day, etc.
