To indirectly follow-up Holger's message: Bigger Buffers usually help with gaining transfer speed of streaming data over high latency WAN links.

If you're just doing tn5250 in LAN, nearly every small setting is sufficient. If you do file transfers, like FTP or Sftp/Scp, you'll notice a performance gain. How big this is, is dependent on a multitude of factors, though.
