I'm going to assume it's not a device naming thing.
Have her pretend she's blind. Have her type in her user name, tab, password, enter and see if the status changes from signon display.
Do you even see the status line at the bottom? This should be visible disconnected or otherwise.
You could check your screen colors. Be a shame if you set your Edit, Preference, Appearance, Color so that your Foreground color matched your Background color. The color at the status line would be your OIR color.
