On some lists that's referred to as a hijacked thread.

Don't do that.

I'll second that motion. I rarely follow hijacked threads, even if the new
subject is something that interests me. I also rarely follow broken
threads, where someone somehow replies to a thread without including an
In-reply-to header in their e-mail.
