I know about this issue. It wasn't a routing problem, but an ethernet framing difference. I learned that, too and by leaving the default *BOTH, everything's working as expected. :-)

When doing this you also need to re-configure the IP address and associated routes.

Yes, but in here, it's a different case. With wrong framing, stuff doesn't work at all. In here, it works, albeit only for a few seconds until IOS crashes. :-)
