Ha, Quadstor, I've been meaning to play with that. I just found out about a
company that makes Thunderbolt 3 to FC adapters which means you could
actually build a VTL-in-a-laptop. With 2 TB NVMe drives and multiple bays
per laptop in the top end you could get a RAID1 2TB VTL in laptop
format...I wouldn't bet a company on it though.

Open Source VTL.
QUADSTOR VTL is open source and supports D-Mode IPL (Per support, I’ve
never used it). You would need to build a server and add a fiber adapter to
the Power 7. This would be a low cost solution but would be the most
flexible solution and provide ability to have multiple backups available.

Subject: Recovery in an unmanned location

I have been given the hypothetical question of how could a single
partition Power 7 IBMi at V7R3 server with NO HMC and NO BRMS be recovered
remotely ?

As USB is not supported on Power 7 as an alternate IPL device that is
ruled out.

If I put the I-BASE01 DVD in the DVD drive. I could initiate a D IPL and
start a system install but I am not sure if I can get the system with ONLY
the I-BASE01 to a operational level where I could then copy the remaining
installation DVD images to a image catalogue or not ?

System does have internal LTO tape so I could do a SAVSYS to tape and
leave the tape in the drive. Only one problem is the SAVSYS will eject
the tape at then end and I don't know how to stop this ?

Please do not ask about how the issue occurred or how the failure of
hardware was resolved without manual intervention, as I said this is
hypothetical!!!

Any suggestions ?

Thank you

Don
