As I recall, deleting a record is largely just setting a "deleted" flag in the record header. All the rest of the data remains the same. (Probably there is also maintenance of a list of deleted records.)

So some enterprising people wrote code to reset the "deleted" flag.

You may be able to find more info in the archives or with Google. Or maybe someone can point you in the right direction.
