Actually I see two processes David.

Are you saying that I need to manually kill any such processes before the install will work properly? I've not had to do that in the past.

I would suggest exiting out of ACS entirely and killing any java processes that look like they are part of ACS.

These are the processes:

4560 ?? S 1:43.20 /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_101.jdk/Contents/Home/jre/bin/java -Djava.class.path=/var/folders/cp/d4v_mb413tvd7lxgg3gvtv5r0000gn/T/ACS.lm4329072910313015799.jar -Dvisualvm.display.name=ACS Daemon -Dcom.ibm.tools.attach.displayName=ACS Daemon com.ibm.iaccess.base.LmHybridServerImpl
63865 ?? S 0:11.85 /Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/jdk1.8.0_101.jdk/Contents/Home/bin/java -Xmx1024m -Xdock:icon=/Applications/IBM i Access Client Solutions.app/Icons/logo128.png -jar /Applications/IBM i Access Client Solutions.app/acsbundle.jar

The first one is the temporary server that holds things in memory. The 2nd one is the main ACS window.
