Apparently it is recommended that you get to 2.6.6.65 before upgrading using the iosupgrade technique to go to 3.x. However there is a little compatibility issue with the file created by viosbr with 2.6.6.61 and beyond and upgrading from those to 3.1.0 directly can be an issue. One desired technique is to go to 3.1.0.x directly by 'creating a custom mksysb'. Which to me sounds like vios speak for creating your own ibm i resave by also including all the latest PTF's. Something the Larry's and Pete's of the world often do. Since I have 6 upgrades to do it may have some merit.
But I'm done in an hour until January 4 so I got some time to let this simmer.
