note the use of the link status check.
From site with a hscroot signon, open the restricted shell terminal
Enter the command tail -F /var/log/messages

it will display the ethernet ports state transitions when you plug your
cable

Cheers

Subject: HMC port location

I moved my tower/floor mount 9009-41A into a rack (with some
modifications...) and in the process must have plugged the network cable
into the wrong port for the HMC (showing "No connection" at the moment).
Based on the images I can find on the Internet, I think I am looking for
two side by side Ethernet ports near the top.  I just can't remember if
they are labeled as "HMC" ports or not.

Before I head over to the location to check on the cabling, anyone have a
quick pointer as to which port(s) I should look for on the back?
