They are different in many ways. For example the HMC is much better suited for handling multiple systems and multiple lpars on each, or on a single, system. And which port to plug in on the box.

From a thirty thousand foot view they have similarities. They both provide 5250 system console access and allow you to view, and change, front panel codes.
