Afaik, that's correct. I think an SQL view is the normal way to have a derived column.

If you absolutely, positively, must have the derived column in the table, maybe you could use FIELDPROC.  Although it's normally for encrypting and decrypting a column's value, it appears you could use it to generate a value, although since it is done with a CALL to a program, not a procedure in a service program, I would imagine the performance is not great.
