I think the "Power10" teaser is merely a vendor licensing promo, along the
lines of "Upgrade now and we'll give you a freebie for Power10."

That seems to confirm what you are saying Rob. Big machines first, then the
rest of us. We are two years into a overpowered P9 for us, so we are likely
to ride it until it's unsupported, so I'll never see a P10 I'm sure.

One may be hoping to play leapfrog and bypass the Power 9.

Granted, only the largest systems (Enterprise Servers) are likely to get
the initial Power 10 availability and people like me running "Scale-out
servers" will likely have to wait.

However if you wait too long leap frog becomes leap rhino. ;-)

"getting ready" usually is a process a vendor should not nag a customer
with - unless there is a hard date to leave the predecessor,

which is not the case for a Power9 system.

I know this doesn't sound like me but I was trying to live by "if you
can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all" and giving the
vendor the benefit of the doubt that their software is not something you
drop in that day and run so getting everything ready months in advance is
not a bad idea.
