Because formulating a problem to someone helps thinking. Often, explaining the problem to someone else (the group) builds a path within the brain to the solution. :-)

In general, if you need to use static text as argument for a program, *always* put the text into single quotes. You don't need quotes if the text contains no *BLANKs, and only "ASCII" chars.

Beware: Single quotes prohibit the expansion of shell variables into the contained value. If you need that, use double-quotes. Nested double-quotes then need to be escaped with a backslash.

BUT I still do not get a $ prompt returned so entering another command just does nothing.

I'd say, curl doesn't finish running, for whatever reason.
