I used to use the scnmsgf utility but the sql service to scan the text is much better. It also has the capability to scan every message file on your system. No longer do you have to guess if that rpg message is in which one of these
QRNXMSG
QRPGMSGE
QRPG3MSGE

I realize the OP is a hobbyist using obsolete equipment, and that is his choice. I thought about that too but it would just slay me not to have the latest OS version.
