THanks. That is what I thought. I pressed a bit harder and it seems the
infrastructure teams might be able to use Veeam or even some basic VMware
tools to back up the entire VMDK and associated files to a NFS mount point
which could be on different storage system. That would do the trick I
think.

Your vHMC might contain images for VIOS install as well as the LPAR
configs of your
servers (which also reside on the server service processor), so you
might be ok
with a backup of all console data via FTPs to some other location and
reinstall
in case of an error.

And - a second (v)HMC to the second Service port on the Power Server is
a good idea.

Since the HMC doesn't change that much, and the console configuration can
be backed up separately I am suggesting we could use backup the VMDK every
now and then. Not getting positive feedback to this idea as it would be
non
standard so I am interested what other shops are doing to backup their
vHMC's
