We used IBMi Navigator monitoring, when an error occurred it calls a
program of ours that emails/text to a group or person. Navigator has a
fair amount of flexibility and your program can have all of the
flexibility you want.
Has worked for us for years. We give just enough information in the text
that if you know what you are looking for you know what is going on. If I
were to do it again I would change our program to use SQL to get more
information to put in the email/text.

What is the best option out there to monitor batch jobs off hours
that
till alert via text/email when a jobs errors or takes longer than
expected? I googled it but didn't come up with much.

Different people/organizations will have different definitions for "best".

Where I work, budget is extremely tight, so if we can roll our own, we
do. (And if we can't, we usually just do without.)

In this case, we did set up our own alert system. The traditional way
to find out job statuses programmatically is to use the QUSLJOB system
API. There are quite a few forums/blogs/articles on the subject.

Nowadays, IBM i Services include a lot of SQL-accessible table
functions (such as ACTIVE_JOB_INFO) that retrieve the same
information. Look under "Work Management Services" for relevant
options.

I trust you know, or can find out, how to send emails from your
system. Text messages can be sent as emails to <number>@vtext.com,
<number>@txt.att.net, etc. You just have to know the carrier for each
number.
