In general, it is as Rob and I both said: x'20' to x'3F' are 5250 attributes; x'40' to x'FE' are displayable characters; anything else could be trouble. Incidentally, the one thing I don't think you'll find in the manual Rob linked to is a chart of what those displayable characters are.

Here's a 5250 Functions Reference. I think it's a little bit different from the one I have in hardcopy, but you'll find that if you scroll down to page 110 (PDF page numbering), you'll find the first of several fairly useful 5250 EBCDIC charts.
