Just a couple thoughts here - what is being compared is performance, not 
compilations vs interpretation, seems to me. The result to the end user 
is slower response with PHP.

I did a quick google of PHP compiler - it seems one can cache the 
machine-code result of the first pass through the code - apparently 
there are 2 passes - PHP experts, please correct me if needed. But 
something called OpCache can make it possible to skip the first pass. 
Now this feels a bit like SQL optimization and plan cache on IBM i. 
Certainly, if you can reuse the results of a "first pass", you save that 
time. But that initial time is less important for long-running 
processes, so it very much depends.
