On current systems when your Ethernet line is a virtual Ethernet, such as one bridged through an IBM i Host partition or a VIOS partition pair, the system will always report *AUTO. Consider that it's not really an Ethernet connection, so some 'Ethernet things' are ignored such as calculating checksums on the packets. It's memory to memory transfer, there better not be any errors!

Actual throughput on the line is mostly determined by the way yer gettin though the VIOS. Could be a single GbE line, an LACP or Etherchannel bundle of up to 8 lines, could be 10G, 25G, even 100G and also it could be a combination of SRIOV to VIOS with VNIC to the IBM i partition.

For maximum velocity SRIOV direct to the partition but then you need virtual IPs to achieve redundancy. VNIC allows VIOS to provide redundancy at little impact to pace.

instead of the 10G you are seeing.

Let's say you configured your line description with
CRTLINETH LIND(LANLIN) RSRCNAME(CMN03) ONLINE(*NO) ETHSTD(*ETHV2)
and WRKLIND, 5, shows:
Ethernet standard . . . . . . . . : *ETHV2
Line speed . . . . . . . . . . . . : *AUTO
Current line speed . . . . . . . . : *AUTO
Duplex . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : *AUTO
Current duplex . . . . . . . . . . : *AUTO

How do you tell what it is currently negotiated as?

What is the point of "Current line speed" vs "Line speed"?

New lpar, not in production yet. Open to changes on this.
