That does sound like precisely what OP is looking for!
If the messages were not already in a message file and needed to be
added "from scratch", there is the ADDMSGD command (which is
ultimately what WRKMSGF uses when you do it manually). So in some
situations, it might be worth writing a program that issues ADDMSGD
repeatedly. For example, if someone had built up a large number of
messages as a table or spreadsheet or something, you could write a
program to transfer those to an actual message file.
