I used to use the U* indicators for something just like this use case.
Easy to set on/off at the job level even during execution.

Subject: RPG program communicating with calling CL program: External indicators? Other ways?

I'm looking for an easy way for a called RPG program to tell the calling
CL program whether or not to save some forensic data. Looking around in
the manual, I see indicators U1..U8 as one possibility. I have a vague
recollection of the subject coming up before, but that's about all I have.

Does anybody here have any suggestions in this vein?
