Typically when there's a hardware problem a message gets sent to the
QSYSOPR message queue.
Monitoring software like Absolute Performance's System Shepherd watches
message queues and alerts on this sort of thing.
There are also open source monitoring packages that have been applied with
some success to IBM i.
IBM's Jesse Gorzinski and friends are currently crafting a new open source
solution called Manzan <https://github.com/ThePrez/Manzan>.
