Or how about a field in the file with the trigger with a unique ID (number)
that you can use to go to another file to get the extra data?

IE.. you post an invoice and have a unique ID field in the invoice file.
You use that unique ID to chain to a separate file (and when I say "chain"
I mean sql, rla, etc...) to get the data required.

Make an ILE function that generates the unique ID using a numeric data
area. What the function does is locks the data area, retrieves the value
from the data area, increments it, returns the value, and unlocks the data
area. That way any process grabbing an id will be unique and the lock
stops them from stepping on each other. I've done something similar for
years and it works great, even in fast paced environments.
