Oh! I thought they appeared earlier. I admit, I did't do much historical research on that sub-topic.

However, I thought your main thrust in this thread was to discuss what you might do before the IFS was added to the IBM i (which was around 1994.) So I'm not sure that data uris make sense, here... sure you can use them to avoid the IFS now, but not historically...

Honestly, I don't think too many people ever served a web site on IBM i back then.

This is also my suspicion, but I don't have proof.

I suspect that pretty much anyone who did that would've used DLO for image files.

Likewise, you could ue something like a USRSPC to store image data in a library... but it would've been awkward to administer, because in order to add/replace pictures on your site, you'd need someone with the technical know-how to convert those pictures into user spaces, et al.

Yeah, that sounds doable, yet pretty much out of question.

Frankly, though... I didn't know anyone doing that sort of thing back then, it just wasn't a common need!

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't assuming a common need. Just passed on word of mouth (aka, mail in this case) and trying to to get more input.

People hosting HTTP servers weren't as commonplace, the TCP/IP support was limited, support for things like stream files was somewhat limited, etc. It just didn't happen.

Well, did *not* or did *rarely* happen? :-) In any case, I see there were quite some obstacles. I'm currently reading again through the "Cool Title About the AS/400 and Internet", moaning about Gopher software for OS/400 probably being lost forever, and getting new overall insights: I've learned quite a lot about the platform since reading through it the first time some years ago.
