If the former, I don't think so, but you could do it with a combo of %editw()and a find/substring operation to create a character field with the result.
Good candidate for a sub-procedure.

Thanks, Roger. Especially for pointing me to an example of fixed-currency-asterisk-fill. None of the manuals I looked at had even that case.

And actually, while I was implementing "big number" support in our QuestView product (the new version will still run under V4, and yet if you run it under an OS version that *has* big numbers, it will *work* with them), I found myself digging around in the limited edit word support I'd added over two decades ago, and correcting a few bugs that had gone unnoticed.

I was looking for a combination of dollar sign and asterisk fill not for an actual application, but rather as a test case.
