You're right - it wasn't backwards. I think I just started trying to get
into it and went off on a tangent.

And most people using these services are looking for the easy way - that's
pretty much the point of them.
Instead of denormalizing the database by using a column to hold multiple
values they could have just had multiple rows for each depended on file.
Like the physical file it's based off of.
