Thanks, Don and all the others who responded.  

I had looked at CHECK as a possible but the manual says it checks the "validity" of the data. The keyboard shift is covered under data type which implies that blank/A causes the keyboard to be in lowercase shift - so I figured I was doing something else wrong.
