No disagreement with your statements.
I am actually doing a create table as using the select and walking the resultant table.

I am the strange beast, I would probably use COBOL with embedded SQL. (390 past).

Thanks,
Monty

Why you want to run it in CL?
RUNSQL does not support SELECT statements!

The only thing you can do is to create a (temporary) view (based on the SELECT statement) and then Declare the view with DCLF and loop through it.

... or you use RPG with embedded SQL

Thanks to all for the input:

Yes ACS and Run SQL Scripts does fix the issue.
I actually did a CAST on PATH_NAME and got the expected result as well, going to put this in a CL with a RUNSQL.
Yes I could create a stored procedure and execute the statement from there without a CAST.

You are not missing anything ... except you are running the statement with STRSQL!
STRSQL is stabilized since Release V4R5 (not a typo!) all newer enhancements in SQL are NOT supported.
Install ACS (IBM i Access Client Solutions) and run the SQL Statement with "Run SQL Scripts"

Subject: IFS_OBJECT_STATISTIC what am I dong wrong/missing

When I do:
SELECT PATH_NAME FROM TABLE
(QSYS2.IFS_OBJECT_STATISTICS(START_PATH_NAME => '/tmp/.com_ibm_tools_attach', SUBTREE_DIRECTORIES => 'YES', OBJECT_TYPE_LIST => '*DIR'))

I get this:
PATH_NAME
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER
*POINTER

When I do:
WRKLNK OBJ('/tmp/.com_ibm_tools_attach/*') DETAIL(*EXTENDED) DSPOPT(*ALL)

I get this:
Object link Type
. DIR
.. DIR
132 DIR
133 DIR
135 DIR
136 DIR
137 DIR
15 DIR
7100 DIR

Why am I getting *POINTER instead of the directory name?

Thanks,
Monty
