Missing a iconv PTF maybe?

Except that (1) the malfunction occurs, in exactly the same way, regardless of whether I'm calling iconv directly, or calling HTTP_xlatep, and (2) we've been routinely using httpapi on that box for over a decade, with sometimes hundreds, or even thousands of web service calls in a single job, without any difficulties.

And I just confirmed that I'm not lying to iconv (or to HTTP_xlatep) about buffer length: I'm passing the correct data length, which is less than 1% of the length of my global static buffer.

With regard to an off-List suggestion that I set up a dummy web service, I initially brushed it off . . . then I realized that a static web page might be all I need, and I've got plenty of Tomcat servers where I could put one of those.
