I've also seen this font corruption, and it is due to the java version. I found the best version was Java 8. Since we're not supposed to be using Oracle for licensing reasons, I copied the IBM version of Java from my RDi installation, and that seems to be one of the few versions that does not have some kind of issue with fonts.
