I admit, you came to mind as I wrote my reply. And I am sure you already are willing to accept any risks of using unsupported software - hey, everything you do is unsupported, right?

There are things weighing in on IBM's decisions about software. One is a security issue - IBM requires all its divisions to be able to ensure everything is safe from security vulnerabilities. Here is a link that describes this -

And the CISA (Cybersecurity & Infrastructure Security Agency) came up with the Secure by Design concept, which is driving this in many companies.


Much older software would be extremely costly to update, put through everything required as described in that document. And is perhaps little used - that would be a second thing. I was at a session given by Steve Will at the COMMON 2024 session, where these things were presented.


So when products are listed as neither marketed nor supported any longer, it is still true that you can run them, at your own risk, both for function and probably for security vulnerability.

Well, I'm using a machine a quarter of a century old with an OS and tools almost the same age, with great success. Any questions? ;-) But then, I don't have a business being dependent on the functioning of this machine. Your mileage may vary. :-)

Taking into account that connections from and to this machine from and to the "outside world" work pretty well, I think, OS/400 has aged extremely well!

One might ask, when was the last time you heard of a support ticket for CICS - so these things can be extremely stable.

I'm pretty sure that there is no substantial change happening on the customer/programming side. Don't fix what ain't broken. :-)
