Tape drives (native or not), SAN storage, disk drives hosted by VIOS, even
FC adapters hosted by VIOS all do not get their firmware from IBM i.
Newer tape libraries, physical and VTL, have management ports you can
access to update firmware. Most often through a GUI interface.
SAN storage has the same.
Adapters hosted by VIOS? Well, just slapping on the latest version of VIOS
doesn't just fix that. Often one has to run a special tool to check the
firmware levels of all your adapters, download the updates and apply them.
Quite a process.
There's a lot one takes for granted with IBM i.
It's been a darn long time since I have had to manage tape drive firmware
with stuff like ITDT.
I did find something in STRSST which is supposed to get that level but it
all looks like hex to me so I sent that off to IBM, while also asking them
for clarity on ITDT or an alternative.

Is there some way to download/install ITDT and run it on IBM i? I have
a tape drive that I'd like to change the firmware level on. 3580 H6S

Isn't hardware managed by LIC? So if there is something old, it's updated
automatically?

Maybe if VIOS is involved, you could do the install on VIOS? Not sure if
there is a tape tools available for IBM i.
