It really bugs me that 3270 data stream and 5250 data stream are seen as
"obsolete."
I started, back in high school, on multiplexed phone lines -- 6
terminals per line, 300 Baud half-duplex on all 6 (IF we were lucky;
more often one terminal per line was 110 Baud), using Lear ADMs,
Datamedia Elites, and Decwriters to communicate with an off-site 370/135.
Some of us would have *killed* for high-speed lines and (in the case of
those who even knew what it was) 3270 data stream (assuming that there
was even a way to generate 3270 screens from VS-BASIC, running under the
McGill University MUSIC operating system). And some of us managed, even
with no language-level or OS-level support, to write game and demo
programs that incorporated the text-semigraphics possible on Lear ADM-1s.
