Why should they care? With single-level store, how can software even tell whether a given persistent space is implemented as NVMe, disk, or old-fashioned ferrite cores?

(I've seen exhibits on core memory. I'd go blind, or insane, or both, trying to assemble that stuff by hand. Especially the ROM version.)
