James,
To your original question.

1: IBM i ftp client instead of server.
If you have an FTP server that is open to the internet they could ftp
directly from their box using the FTP client on their IBM i. Providing
their lpar of IBM i has access to be an internet client.

2: iACS.
You may not be using iACS but there's no reason not to start. With the
latest versions one does not even need the server license anymore. You may
make/market your own 5250 emulator but I would not consider that any reason
to eschew all the rest of iACS.

3: Navigator
https://gdihq.dekko.com:2003/Navigator/mainframe/ifs/integrated-file-system
You can download/upload from that.

4: File share
Create a file share (not on /, but on a subdirectory). Share via that.

5: mounting vs file share. Not any easier but available for some
situations. For James sake, let's spare that debate.

6: email.
If you have an email client of choice on that lpar of IBM i you can attach
it to an email and send it that way.

Ladies and Gentlemen:

Call me a Luddite, but given that we've never been an ACS shop, the only
tool I've ever used for getting save files onto or off of a Midrange box
has been good old-fashioned FTP.

Assuming somebody has ACS, but either doesn't have an FTP server running
on their box, or doesn't have an FTP client running on their desktop,
what would be the easiest way for such an individual to transfer a save
file onto or off of the Midrange box?
