Have been working with this idea for awhile now. It really does a good job with an NT based system. Active Directory, how ever, is another thing! Just trying to get the graphical management piece working so that there is the easy "User Manager" capability. Check out the discussion groups at http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=samba-ntdom&r=1&w=2. You can even maintain an NT domain (it can act as a | Primary controller). It would save a TON of money for licenses and such. <snip> | Subject: Linux as a "Windows" aware file server | | I have been reading up on Linux and started playing around with it. | | I was wondering if anyone had considered or even tried, running Linux and | then using Samba to handle Windows workstations/files as a server in place | of Windows NT or 2000 Server ? | | Could save a TON of money. I know that many folks have already made the | investment in Windows Server (or Novell) so that might be a tough sell, | but | in our case, NO server other than the AS/400 (well and out Cobalt Qube 2 | Linux based email server), would it be a reasonable choice (?) | | Thanks ! | | Chuck | | _______________________________________________ | This is the Non-Technical Discussion about the AS400 / iSeries | (Midrange-NonTech) mailing list | To post a message email: Midrange-NonTech@midrange.com | To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, | visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/midrange-nontech | or email: Midrange-NonTech-request@midrange.com | Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives | at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-nontech. | _______________________________________________ | This is the Non-Technical Discussion about the AS400 / iSeries (Midrange- | NonTech) mailing list | To post a message email: Midrange-NonTech@midrange.com | To subscribe, unsubscribe, or change list options, | visit: http://lists.midrange.com/cgi-bin/listinfo/midrange-nontech | or email: Midrange-NonTech-request@midrange.com | Before posting, please take a moment to review the archives | at http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-nontech.
