I think the lease is looking better all the time, $175 a month would be
great, I'm in the UK, and I've talked to someone at IBM UK before, it worked
out more expensive than that, but not hugely. I'll see what deals are
available now.
Thanks a lot

Not off eBay - only a new box leased through the Partner program.
Do some of the eBay boxes have the licenses? IBM even sells some there
and might do it.
As to Partner lease, I think the rate might be 1.75% of hardware price -
it might be more or less now - on a 10,000 dollar box, that's 175 a
month. You get support contract dirt cheap there, too, and all the
software you want to order - at the time. Later additions cost more, so
fill it up. You can probably get a reasonable small box that way - of
course, if you want to play with LPARs, it'll be "who knows"
The virtual loaner thing - you have full QSECOFR privileges there. If
you didn't mind re-upping every once in a while, at night or something,
it could be a good enough option for a while.

Vern, are you saying that the software is basically free even if I get
hardware off eBay, not from IBM?wrote:

Would a timeshare fill your needs? If so, take a look at
http://www.rzkh.de
They offer free use of a partition there and have all the compilers.

Hi All,ILE
Hope I'm on the right list here.. I'm after a cheap developer box with
compilers, C in particular. Anyone know a good place to get one, or
anyone have one for sale? All the dealers I've tried cannot help as

not allow them to sell on the licenses on refurb hardware.
Any pointers would be great, I'm in the UK but happy to buy from the
