[PCTECH] Broadband - (was Comparing our Geekhoods... )

Speaking broadband in the boonies, I read in the newspaper this morning
that the FCC is currently drawing up regulations for allowing broadband
over power lines.

i.e. plugging your modem into the wall socket instead of cable, phone, etc.
for internet access.

they say the regulations could be ready in a few months, and availability
in a couple years.

has anyone heard of this technology?  any estimates on speed?  If this were
widely available, reliable and fast, it could put the cable and satalite
broadbands out of business.  The infrastructure is universal - everyone
gets a light bill.
