If running WinXP, let the OS do it:  Right-click the file, select
Properties.  On the General tab, note the Size & Size on Disk.  Then
select the Advanced button. Select "Compress contents to save disk
space" and OK.  Once the compression is done, the Size on Disk should be
significantly less.  Also, future additions will be automatically
compressed as well.  I've found very using compression on certain files
& folders adds negligible overhead to the system; it's unnoticeable on
any modern system.  

Note that if you go compression-happy, you should probably refrain from
hard-hit folders like C:\Windows and C:\Progra~1.  C:\Docume~1 seems to
be fine compressed.

My 178MB .PST takes 118MB on disk.

I'm using OfficeXP and my PST file for Outlook is over 900 meg!!  I've
deleted several thousand messages in several inbox folders.  I've also
run the "compact now" feature in File/Data File Management/Settings but
the size of the file has not decreased.  Suggestions?
