I have no experience with that particular server, but I can tell you why
I went with a homemade server over one like this in one word (ok, one
acronym):

RAID

All the servers I looked at when I was looking (about a year ago) didn't
offer RAID at a reasonable price. If I'm going to store photos on it I
want to keep those photos when my drive dies.
