RE: MS Frontpage (Trial Version) -- PCTECH

Peter,

You have gotten lots of suggestions and, it appears, your answer.  As a current 
traveler on the website creation learning highway I thought I would share my 
experiences with some of the suggestions.  This has occurred over a period of 
several years so some of the versions of software I used have been replaced 
with better products.

My first attempts were to use MS Word as my editor and save as HTML.  It was 
difficult to achieve quality results and the resulting code was so bloated and 
hard to understand that I scrapped this idea quickly.

Next I tried FrontPage.  I found it difficult to use and experienced many of 
the same issues as using Word.

I then went to a package from Symantec (PageMaker I believe).  It was easier to 
use but had some quirks that left me wanting something better.  There were also 
some bugs that were very frustrating.

Neither FrontPage or the Symantec product helped much when it came to 
understanding HTML either.

Lastly I have been using DreamweaverMX.  It's great.  I was introduced to it 
during a class at the local community college so I actually got some training 
in the package which may be why I like it so much more.  One of my favorite 
options is that I can split the screen to show the HTML code in the top half 
and the end result in the bottom.  This has really helped me get a better 
understanding of HTML as I can see the changes immediately instead of having to 
wade through entire pages of HTML trying to find where the piece I want is 
embedded.

Dreamweaver is a little pricey but it you are a student you can pick it up for 
around $100.

The other annoying thing that I understand about Frontpage is that it uses
Microsoft-only extensions, and to publish Frontpage-created websites on a
host, the host needs to support the FP extensions.  Not all hosts do this.
I stayed away from FP because of this.

If your friend is looking at FP as a visual HTML designer to create
something visually so that he can see the underlying HTML that gets
generated, he may find a lot of Microsoft-only stuff in it and might not be
able to discern what is Microsoft and what is normal HTML.

Walden and others with FP experience, please correct as necessary.
