Thanks Dan. I've hit that one site I referenced and they say to avoid the
"utility tool" usage...

So I am waiting for a general price from them.

If it still spins, try freezing the drive overnight and then see if data can
be recovered.

Somewhere on the 'net there's a list of like 50 things to try when a drive
goes south.  Might be worth a look before sending it off somewhere.
