Sounds scary, Chuck.  That doesn't sound like Microsoft's usual ways of
extracting money from our pockets.  <g>

Could this be a remnant of the remote Messenger bug they cured awhile back?

Is he up-to-date on patches (SP2)?  I would try SpyBot and AdAware, too.
