Dave,

I started out thinking I wanted to go the dedicated hardware route instead of a
combination video card. Partly due to cost, partly because it seemed to offer
more options than a video card solution. After looking into the Dazzle
products I'm beginning to rethink that strategy.

Disk space shouldn't be an issue I hope. I have a 120Gb hard drive most of
which is unused. Memory is currently 512Mb.

When I first got started with PC video I used a Dazzle. It worked OK but
the software (Moviestar) had a "funky-looking" but non-intuitive interface.
Although it was connected to a USB 2.0 port it still didn't have great
bandwidth. I've now gone the video card route. I use an ATI All-In-Wonder
(9600, if I remember correctly). It's not the top of the line but it had
built-in dual monitor support which was a big item for me. The
All-In-Wonder line have a built in TV tuner and composite video in/out.
Going the video card route you get the faster AGP bus speed. The quality
is definitely better than Dazzle. Pinnacle also has a package similar to
Dazzle but I haven't used it.

Make sure that you have a big enough hard drive space if you aren't going
burn it to DVD right away. Video files can get big fast. Lots of memory
is a good thing too.

I'm looking at adding video capture to my PC. Primarily for converting old
VHS tapes to DVD but also as a means to store current video from a digital
camcorder to DVD. I looked at the Dazzle products but most of the reviews
I read weren't very good. I don't know if the products are really that bad
or if it's just a few disgruntled user making a lot of noise.

If anyone has any experience with video capture I'd like to hear you
recommendations on how to get started.
